The creation of the Sherpa Half Marathon was a chance meeting for lunch with Pemba Sherpa at his restaurant in Boulder, CO. Having grown up in Nepal, Pemba always wanted to give back to his beloved homeland. Over the past decades he has done just that on numerous occasions. Given my travel industry background and running experience, we were off and running. Pemba had just returned from a trip to Kathmandu and had an idea of creating a running event on the hills of the Kathmandu Valley, and he had a perfect spot. I travelled to Kathmandu in early 2024 to scout out the location and viability of creating a race, specifically a half marathon course. Pemba wasn't wrong. The location, surrounding The Terraces Resort & Spa was perfect, providing awe-inspiring views of Himalayas. The Managing Director, Tenzing, is a runner and familiar with the trails surrounding the property. Together we mapped a rudimentary running route. A subsequent visit again in 2024 with Jacqui helped to solidify and mark the course. Jacqui would again visit Kathmandu in 2024, to finalize and approve the course.
The Inaugural Sherpa Half Marathon was held on March 7, 2025. A total of 41 runners participated in the half marathon event. There were also two dozen local school children that participated in the 1.5KM children's race. A 10K race will be added for the 2026 Sherpa Half Marathon.
We are excited to bring to runners the best year yet in 2027. We have used the feedback of clients and participants to ensure the best quality accommodations, sightseeing, and overall experience. Most travelers will begin this journey expecting to only want to visit Nepal once. Many leave with the feeling that they need to return. You will be captivated by the hospitality of the Nepalese people and awe-inspiring beauty of the Himalayas.
We have created this event with the ambition to give back to the local community. A portion of the proceeds will be presented to a local charity to help enrich and improve the lives of the local communities. We have also arranged for every international runner race entry booked with Coddiwomple Travel to cover the race entry fee for a local runner.
The Sherpa Half Marathon combines an adventure half marathon with an option to do some additional Himalayan trekking.
